〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Hermes Costello, no moniker
CHARACTER AGE: 21
SERIES: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (Part Six: Stone Ocean)
CHRONOLOGY: From after her death in chapter 154
CLASS: Hero verging on anti-hero! She's definitely one of the good guys in her series, but like, she still drowns a dude in shit at one point.
HOUSING: Roommate me blazer

BACKGROUND: here is her page on the Jojo's wiki, and here is a summary of Stone Ocean in general!

PERSONALITY: Hermes is first introduced to Jolyne and the reader as a character who's been around the block, knows her way around the prison system, and is sure as shit not going to let someone take advantage of her. She curses like a sailor, she tells people to fuck off when they approach her, she talks openly about masturbation and maxi pads, she jumps to insulting people almost immediately-- they're defensive traits that are necessary to survive in prison, and to prevent people from getting close to her, and Hermes uses them easily. That's not to say that these traits are a front-- even among her friends, Hermes curses, makes dirty jokes, and encourages the others to protect themselves and not let strangers get too friendly with them-- but they're the most obvious ones that she puts forward to keep the wrong people away from her.

Hermes is fiercely protective and loyal to the people that she's close to. She's not the sort of person to jump into helping any random stranger-- she has to look out for herself and her own people, an approach that was particularly necessary while in prison. If someone makes their way past her defenses and into her heart, though, she'll be there to back them up one hundred percent. Anyone who falls short of that line will be told to fuck off, immediately and repeatedly. Once Hermes and Jolyne become friends, Hermes very quickly gets involved in helping Jolyne save her father: she volunteers to go out into the marshes around the prison based on the fact that Jolyne is going there, even before Jolyne tells her why she suspects there's a lead out there; she offers to cover a hundred dollar bet since Jolyne doesn't have the money herself; once she literally loses her liver to a debt collector and the only thing she thinks to do is to warn Jolyne not to fall for the same trick, while hunched over and dying since she's missing a major organ. Hermes is willing to go hard to protect the people that she sees as her family, and to provide them with support when they need it the most. When Weather Report dies, Hermes puts on a strong front for the others, and then retreats out of sight behind a car to cry. When Jolyne is shaken by one of the villain's assertions that she's only helping him with his goals, Hermes steps in to kill him mid-sentence and assures Jolyne that he's just trying to rattle her.

Hermes' loyalty and resolve is best summed up by her actions after the death of her sister Gloria, both in terms of how she fixates on getting revenge for her sister and how readily she incorporates Jolyne's goal into her plans. After her sister's death, her father dies, leaving Hermes with no family, a lot of anger at the way her sister was treated, and the brilliant idea of getting herself incarcerated so she could kill the guy who did it. When Hermes starts stalking Sports Maxx in the prison (that's literally the guy's name, I'm sorry for this canon), she keeps the others at arm's length to protect them; FF guesses that Hermes didn't mention her history to Jolyne not because it was so personal, but because Jolyne was occupied with her father's problems and Hermes didn't want to add another issue to her plate. When Hermes kills Sports Maxx, literally the thing she's dedicated her entire life to since Gloria's death, she also realizes in that moment that he must have had contact with White Snake, and decides to try to obtain his memories so she can help Jolyne. After Sports Maxx comes back (as an invisible zombie, Stand powers really suck sometimes) and she finally manages to defeat him for good, she tells Jolyne that she feels like crying but she knows that they don't have time for it, because they have to stop White Snake instead.

Hermes believes strongly in her own sense of justice, though that justice is looser than that of a typical straightforward hero. Ever since the police failed to protect her sister, she decided that she would have to take matters into her own hands rather than relying on outside help or anyone else. She commits armed robbery to land herself in prison (for the second time!) for several years in order to get closer to her sister's murderer, completely abandoning her plans to go to college in favor of, well, getting a criminal record in order to kill a guy. She uses her powers to cheat in a bet to earn money (to help her friend get bribe money so she can help her father stay alive). She has no problems breaking out of prison and stealing a car (to go after a supervillain who is undoubtedly planning something shady). She's comfortable with injuring a guy's tongue to prevent him from reporting them to the police once they break out. All that being said, she's not committing crimes for the hell of it, and though she typically prioritizes herself and her friends above random strangers who are in danger, she's still on the heroic side of the spectrum. For instance, one of the villains drops three sick children into a dangerous situation, hoping that Hermes and Jolyne will sacrifice them in order to save themselves and then be tormented by the guilt. Instead, Hermes finds a way to save everyone, at great risk to herself and Jolyne, only leaving them more determined to defeat the villain.

It's worth noting two related facets of Hermes' personality here: her extreme creativity and willingness to put herself in danger for the cause. While most characters in this canon could be nominated for some sort of lateral-thinking award, Hermes shows an astounding degree of creativity in how she uses her power, which on the surface seems like it can't do much and has as many drawbacks as strengths. A lot of this creativity comes from her willingness to use her duplication powers on herself, even though her power inherently damages the thing that it's used on. Stands are a reflection of the user's psyche, and Hermes succeeds at using hers so well because she's willing to hurt herself to achieve her goals if need be. Just like she's willing to get herself arrested for years in order to get revenge for her sister, in the fight against her sister's murderer she lets a zombie eat her brains as part of her plan to defeat him.

POWER:
STANDS (Kiss)
Like other characters in her canon, Hermes can project a physical manifestation of her fighting ability, called a Stand, to punch things. Hermes’ Stand is called Kiss and has a vaguely humanoid appearance (here is its page on the wiki for an idea of what it looks like). Hermes can summon Kiss at will and has full control over what Kiss does, though Stands will sometimes act automatically to protect their user (usually when the user is first adjusting to having them). Kiss can move around about two meters from Hermes' body and can punch or kick other things as an extension of Hermes' ~fighting spirit~. Any damage done to her Stand is reflected on Hermes’ body; if something hits Kiss's arm, Hermes' arm takes damage in the same place. Typically, only people with Stands can see Stands and only another Stand can damage them, but in MoM the cast has agreed that any imPort can see and interact with Stands, since otherwise this is even more OP than they usually are. That's because in addition to punching and kicking things, most Stands have a unique ability. Kiss's is duplication powers.

>DUPLICATION POWERS:
Hermes’ Stand (and as an extension, Hermes herself) can generate stickers from her palms. If Hermes puts this sticker on an object, that object is duplicated. When Hermes removes the sticker from the original, the copy and the original snap back together, causing some damage to the original. This is a weirdly specific power that Hermes uses in very creative ways. For example:
-If Hermes duplicates a teapot, the liquid inside it will also duplicate. When she removes the sticker, the teapot cracks and breaks after joining back together, spilling the liquid.
-If Hermes duplicates a mop, and someone picks up the mop, she can remove the sticker and the two mops will snap back together, hitting the person holding the mop.
-Hermes duplicates her own nose when the lower half of her face is held under water. The second nose’s nostrils are above the water line, so she can keep breathing. When she removes the sticker, she starts bleeding from the bridge of her nose.
-Hermes can stack a bunch of stickers onto the same object (ie, someone’s head) to duplicate it multiple times and increase the damage caused by removing them.
-Hermes duplicates an arrow, and then fires the duplicate at the top of a building. She holds onto the original arrow and removes the sticker. The original arrow gets pulled up to the duplicate arrow to join with it again, pulling Hermes up to the top of the building along with it.
-She does this with a gun later on in the series, hauling the entire group along at bullet speed.
-Hermes can pass the stickers to other people, who can use them in the same way. Other people can also remove the stickers on the objects, causing them to combine with each other.

These stickers still work even if they or the objects are more than 2 meters away from Hermes.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Alright, listen up, I've got two things to say.

First: if anyone sees a shitty, sketchy priest running around Cape Canaveral, tell me where he is so I can punch his face in. Even if it's just a bunch of weird shit happening, I probably want to know about it. Don't fucking approach him or fall for his bullshit, just say 'yo, Hermes, I saw the priest over there' and I'll take it from there.

Second: what the fuck is Disney World doing in bumblefuck Alabama here? What sort of shitty version of Florida doesn't even have Disney?

Third-- I lied, I have three things-- yo, Jolyne. ['Did you make it,' she wants to say, but ultimately, if the priest is here-- which he should be; she died in Cape Canaveral when time started continuously speeding up, and then woke up in the future in "some other world's" version of Cape Canaveral, it doesn't make sense if he wasn't a part of this somehow-- she doesn't want to give him the satisfaction. Instead, after a pause, she picks up like nothing happened.] Kid? Professor Kujo? Hell, Anasui-- you guys here yet or what?

FINAL NOTES: I cannot believe that I have to say this but Hermes had surgery on her breasts so she could sneak money into prison; she can hold at least $500 in her breasts. I'm sorry that you had to read this sentence.
